During the beginning of March, I was privileged to travel to Holland and spend some quality time with people from around the world who do much in the field of brain-injury research and intervention.

Dr Andrew I.R. Maas – Professor and Chairman, Department of Neurosurgery, University Hospital Antwerp, Belgium – especially stood out to me during the opening session as he thoughtfully accepted the 2016 Lifetime Achievement Award from International Brain Injury Association (IBIA).

The following day as our paths crossed, I decided to lay-hold of the moment and ask him a few interview questions. One of them was simply this: How would you describe hope…after a brain injury?

After a few seconds of quietness, he slowly and resolutely replied, “As essential as food.”

Today, as you make tough decisions and struggle with what to do next, please take time to lean-in to Hope…. It’s essential for life!
