Wonder if you ever feel this way? Jan, a TBI survivor, wrote this ‘spot-on’ poem. See what you think….
On the outside
You see me as normal
On the inside
I see how non-normal I am.
On the outside
I appear involved in the discussion
On the inside
I see how furiously my brain is working – just to keep up.
On the outside
You see me forget things
On the inside
I am infuriated by my forgetfulness.
On the outside
My words seem to come easily
On the inside
I can feel the words slipping away from my lips.
On the outside
You see me laughing at jokes
On the inside
I don’t get it—I feel stupid.
On the outside
You see me as normal
On the inside
I see my brain injury
And it hurts.
